About
A Legacy of Craftmanship
TreHus was founded in 1982 by Dave Amundson, a descendant of Norwegian craftsmen who ran Amundson Boat Works on White Bear Lake in the 1920s. There, they designed and built handcrafted sailboats and rowboats. Their legendary craftsmanship is the legacy that guides everything we do at TreHus. Our company name — Norwegian for “house of wood” — reflects this heritage and our commitment to thoughtful, lasting work.
This tradition continues through our Master Carpenter system, which allows our carpenters to focus entirely on their craft while project managers handle the details. From these roots, TreHus has grown into a full-service design-build remodeling company, where residential architects, interior designers, and craftsmen work together to ensure every project reflects skill, care, and exceptional quality.
Rooted in Craft.
Guided by Values.
At TreHus, building is more than a profession; it is a philosophy. We approach every project with integrity, care, and respect for design and detail. Guided by our core values, expressed in the 25 Principles to Work By created by our founder, we honor timeless craftsmanship, thoughtful collaboration, and responsibility to others, shaping the lasting legacy of our work and defining who we are. These values guide every home remodel, addition, and custom build we undertake for homeowners throughout Minneapolis, Edina, Minnetonka, and the surrounding Twin Cities area.
Principle 1: Two or more people working together as a team can achieve far more than any one person can achieve alone.
Principle 3: Pursue excellence and the money will follow.
Principle 4: Patience and perseverance will pay off.
Principle 21: Craftsmanship is a learned art, but the desire to be a craftsman is birthed by the ideals within us and is sustained by our love of beauty.
Principle 25: We are ‘culture bearers’. We are the last remnant in our culture to provide for the average person something that is custom-made for them as individuals.
Architecture, Design, and Construction
TreHus is home to an award-winning team of residential architects, designers, and craftsmen who share a commitment to excellence. Each stage of your remodel is led by an expert in their field, whether design, planning, or construction.
Unlike the common model of hiring an architect, a separate designer, and a general contractor who may never have worked together, our AIA architects, ASID interior designers, project managers, and master carpenters work as one in-house team. When a structural question comes up mid-project, it is resolved internally, without waiting on a third party or sorting through conflicting advice, keeping design decisions aligned with construction realities throughout.
For clients, that means fewer moving parts and a clearer path from early ideas to finished space, with residential architects and designers remaining involved throughout construction, and a three-step process designed to balance design ambition with budget realities.
