A Carefully Crafted Attic Remodel in Minneapolis
High above Kelly’s home, an attic sat frozen in time—its sagging ceilings and uneven floors a stark contrast to the care and beauty below. Last touched in the 1980s, the space was closed off and unusable, yet full of potential to extend the warmth and historic character of the lower levels from a previous TreHus renovation. Kelly envisioned a serene retreat for family gatherings: elevated and calm, secluded yet connected to the life of the home. She turned once again to TreHus to bring that vision to life.
Structural Upgrades for Historic Attic
Addressing major structural issues was the first step in updating the attic. Kelly’s top priority was to “square up the space” and reinforce any vulnerable spots in the roofing to keep unwanted critters out and ensure the space would be both secure and usable. Correcting these issues, along with leveling the floors and ceilings, provided a stable framework for the design to unfold and for the family’s retreat to be fully functional.

Innovative Attic Renovation Solutions
As with many historic homes, the remodel presented unexpected conditions that required flexible and innovative design solutions. From building a temporary stair tower to protect the newly remodeled lower stories of the home to creative minimal waste practices, Kelly shares that “it’s this kind of flexible thinking and problem solving that we have come to really appreciate about our TreHus team.”

When asked about a moment from the remodel that stands out to her, Kelly fondly remembers the solution to not wanting to waste extra original wood removed from her home. “Tyler Marsh– one of the carpenters on our first remodel who came back for the second– shared my husband’s enthusiasm for the woodworking details in our home. We had some original wood that had to be taken out for our new design, and Tyler repurposed it to create a table for his own home,” Kelly says. “It’s fun to think that some of our house lives on in his.”
This commitment to preserving the home’s original character continued as the team turned their attention to the attic bathroom. Believed to be original to the house, the attic’s bathroom held a beautiful antique clawfoot tub. After much debating and consulting with the TreHus team, Kelly ultimately decided to refinish rather than replace this piece, maintaining the original history of this home and bringing a well-loved artifact from her once-disheveled attic back to life.

Attic Renovation for Family Living
Today, the Uptown Historical Attic finally now reflects the beauty of the rest of her home and offers the perfect space to gather with family. Spacious and cozy, this attic creates a smooth transition from the lower levels to a treetop retreat with a historic feel. “We now have a spot where we can comfortably gather with our three grown children and their partners to watch movies together,” Kelly shares, “I dream that my future grandchildren will enjoy playing up there, too.” As Kelly sits in her favorite part of the remodel– a reading nook in the front dormer of the house– she can see people walking along the street below and even catch a glimpse of the bustle of downtown Minneapolis in the distance, all from her “perch up above,” she explains. “It’s very peaceful being up in the trees.”
Kelly’s Advice for Historic Home Renovations
After her second remodel with TreHus, Kelly’s advice to anyone considering remodeling their home is to expect the unexpected. “Old homes hold surprises that even the best planning can’t anticipate,” she says, “be ready to go with the flow and in the end you’ll have your dream come true. TreHus is worth every penny.”
